Joyce Chang

Joyce ChangI was born in Taiwan, and began going to church even before I was born because my parents were Christians. I grew up in a Christian environment so naturally I asked lots of questions about Jesus, God and what heaven was like. My parents decided we should move to Canada soon after my sister Grace was born.

My parents had arguments often. It was hard during those times. I would cover my ears with my hands, wishing that they would stop yelling at each other. It was a while until I learned that I could pray to God for anything and everything so during my parents' arguments, I'd squeeze my eyes shut and pray in my mind. I found that it helped the anger, sadness and pain I felt when they were quarrelling and the praying brought me closer to Jesus.

It was very different here in Burnaby, but my family still went to church every Sunday. After a year, I felt comfortable with my classmates and was eager to go to school but little did I know that Jesus had other plans for me. My family and I moved to Maple Ridge, where I was the only Asian in my new class. I was lucky to have one caring friend who helped me improve my English but still, one particular boy was mean to me. When I tried to tell the teacher, she seemed to ignore me. I began to dread school and at home I told my mom and dad everything that hurt each day. Their English was probably worse than mine so they couldn't do anything about it either but we could pray.

One day in grade 2, my Sunday school teacher asked me and the other little kids if we were sorry for displeasing Jesus and wanted Jesus to come into our lives. I said yes and together, we asked Jesus for the forgiveness of everything we had done in the past that was wrong. I welcomed Jesus into my heart and he is there even as you are reading this.

Fast forward to today. Jesus has done so much for me since. He has been in control over my life and has helped me through good times and bad times. But I can't wait until the day I can be with Jesus in heaven eternally!
