For the purpose of encouraging and strengthening one another to effectively live out the Christian faith in the workplace
The Market Place and the Discipleship groups ministered to the Urban Promise staff and families on Friday, July 21. Click here for more information.
Many of the men described in the Bible are ordinary people working and earning their livelihood within the economic system of their time. It is no different from what most of us do today. But when we study the lives of these men of faith, we see the great impact and influence they had in the community they live in. Wouldn't that be something we want to do? Or are we contented to just grow in our Christian faith, trying our best to live righteous lives, having no impact or influence on the lives of people that God brings across our path?
We see Lot as a man living a righteous life, in spite of being in the midst of a wicked city. 2 Pet 2:7-8 attests to this: "...He rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)..." But Lot never had an impact and was unable to change Sodom and Gomorrah. In the end, all the people in these cities were destroyed, but Lot and his family were saved.

But if we study Abraham, we see him as a businessman living out his priesthood calling. When he learned that the Lord was going to judge and destroy Sodom, he pleaded with the Lord to spare the city (Gen 18:16-33). When his nephew, Lot, was captured by the enemy, he rounded 318 trained men born in his household to rescue him (Gen 14:14). When the king of Sodom wanted to buy over Abraham's men after his successful defeat of the enemies, Abraham said to him, "I will accept nothing belonging to you, not even a thread or the thong of a sandal, so that you will never be able to say, 'I made Abraham rich'" (Gen 14:23).
The story of Abraham inspires us. He personifies the priesthood calling of the man in the market place. He was able to make a clear stand of what he stood for. Abraham impacted not just his own generation, but also the generations that followed.
As men in the market place, wouldn't we also want our faith to make a difference in the lives of others?
If you possess one or more of the following qualities -- visionary zeal, drive, motivation, adaptability to change, risk-taker, refusing to accept the status quo, thinks out of the 'box', wants a 'global' vies and not just a 'local' view -- then you have something that you can impart and share with others...
We believe that God has a calling for Christians to recover their priesthood in the public working arena. All Christians are called to be 'priests' in their own work or business arena (1 Pet 2:9).
For this reason, we have deliberately called this gathering "The Market Place", and conduct our meetings in a public setting.
Our meetings will be a time to learn from each other's life experiences, be supported with each other's physical and spiritual resources, and to be cheered on in our respective work arenas.
